The South Main Chapel & Mercy Center is a 501(c)(3) faith-based, non-profit organization in Anderson, South Carolina. The church is located at 2408 South Main Street in Anderson in a facility that was once the Orrville United Methodist Church. Reverend Susan Leonard-Ray, the Anderson District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church, had a vision for Anderson to establish a church that would work alongside those dealing with homelessness and poverty. Her vision grew out of the Triune Mercy Center in Greenville. Reverend Leonard-Ray, along with Reverend Kurt Stutler and Carol Burdette, president of United Way of Anderson County, visited Triune and began plans for establishing a church and ministry in Anderson similar to the Greenville center.

A dream team of persons representing several different churches and denominations began meeting in July 2013 to discuss the feasibility of forming a ministry modeled after Triune Mercy Center. In March 2014, the vision became a reality when the project was selected as a recipient of the new church-start support from the South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. In June 2014, Reverend Kurt Stutler was appointed as the founding pastor/director. The church opened on June 29, 2014. Currently, Sunday morning worship consists of a diverse congregation and averages ninety in attendance, proving that it is possible for God’s people to become one family across social and economic boundaries.

In addition to Sunday morning worship, a fellowship dinner is offered each Sunday following the service. Several area churches, non-profit organizations and businesses support this outreach meal. Services offered during the week include on-site mental health counseling, vocational rehab counseling, nursing care, addiction recovery referrals, transportation and housing assistance and other case management services for over five hundred individuals in our community.

The church has become a place of service for people who are in need of services that they cannot afford. Volunteers are a vital part of our ministry. Areas of volunteerism include providing meals, making donations, beautifying our grounds, providing transportation, answering phones, preparing hygiene packets, cleaning, painting, etc. Please contact Jenny Craddock, Operations Director, at (864) 437-8298 if you are interested in volunteering at the South Main Chapel & Mercy Center.
